Throughout the past 160 years of history, World Expositions have been significant events, deeply influencing the development trends of the world. During the reign of King Mongkut, Thailand became one of the first three Asian nations to participate in World Expos, along with China and Japan, since the very first universal exhibition in the mid 19th century.

Thailand hosted the Royal Flora Ratchaphruek 2006, one of the world’s finest horticultural expositions recognised by BIE and the International Association of Horticultural Producers (AIPH) as A1 status, befitting the name, Royal Flora Ratchaphruek 2006 – International Horticultural Exposition for His Majesty the King. Royal Flora Ratchaphruek was hosted in the city of Chiang Mai from November 1, 2006 to January 31, 2007.

WHAT IS WORLD EXPO?

The World Exposition, also known as the World Expo, is the world class exposition that has been continuously organised since the first exposition took place in London in 1851, with member countries taking turns to be the host. The Bureau of International Exposition (BIE) is the international organization that holds the rights to the World Expo and is also in charge of the management and administration of the events. Thailand first joined the exposition in 1862 (B.E.2405) before becoming an official BIE member in 1993. In the past, The World Expo has been known by various names, such as the Universal Exhibition, the International Exhibition, the International Exposition, and the Exposition Universal etc. Today, however, it is held under the now well known name of "World Expo." The World Expo is a world-wide, world-class event – one of the 3 biggest events in the world, the other two being the Olympic Games and the FIFA World Cup.

WHAT IS BIE?

The Bureau of International Expositions (BIE) is the international inter-governmental organization established by the Convention Relating to International Exhibitions in 1928. Its headquarters is located in Paris, France. Initially, there were 34 member countries; currently, more 150 countries are the members of this organization. Thailand itself has been a member of the BIE since 1993.
